apr 28, 1952 - Treaty of San Francisco
Description:
The treaty of San Francisco or also known as the Treaty of Peace with Japan was a treaty established between the United States and Japan that made Japan an ally of the United Nations. Under this treaty, Japan agreed to acknowledge Korea’s independence, gave up their rights and access to Taiwan, the Pescadores, the Kurils, and southern Sakhalin as well as the Pacific Islands. By diminishing Japan’s imperial holdings, Japan’s power subsided under the management of the United Nations. As a result, Japan would not pose a threat and would be removed from Russia’s communist influence; ultimately, it added another nation to the party of allies, giving the United States one more ally over the Soviet Union. This treaty is a major shift in the relations between the United States and Japan, a shift from seeing Japan as a socialist enemy after the bombing on Pearl Harbor to now considering Japan an ally of democracy.
