apr 7, 1950 - National Security Council (NSC-68)
Description:
The NSC-68 was a 58 page classified document that held the contents concerning tensions between the Soviets and the United States. The document’s authors wrote about their disagreement to a return to isolationism, a continuation of diplomatic efforts with the Soviet Union, and a persistent effort to amass economic, military, and political strength to outshine Soviet efforts to become the leading world power. This document was a direct address of the tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War while also providing analysis and a cautious plan as to how the United States would handle the Soviet Union. The document entails the United State’s caution in a direct attack on the Soviet Union with military force like they have with Japan in the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The document shows that the United States is still very much involved in conflicts with other countries but rather than being aggressive and direct, the U.S. is being more strategic and covert.
