oct 24, 1871 - Chinese Massacre of 1871
Description:
After a White man was killed during a crossfire between rival Chinese groups, more than 500 White and Hispanic rioters surrounded and attacked a Chinese community in LA. The massacre resulted in the lynching of at least 17 Chinese men and boys. These Asian Americans were hanged in many downtown sites, especially at places where rioters could find a supporting beam to hang a noose. Although eight rioters were convicted of manslaughter, their convictions were overturned. There were no other persons who were punished.
