jan 1, 641 - Jowo Rinpoche
Description:
Enshrined in the Jokhang Temple in Lhasa, Tibet, Jowo Rinpoche is believed to have been brought to Tibet in 641 CE by a Chinese princess marrying the Tibetian emperor. It is a statue made of gilt metal with blue hair, and its arrival in Tibet coincides with the foundation of Tibetian Buddhism.
We do not know what the sculpture originally looked like, as it has undergone restoration and reconstruction over the years (most recently, during the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s).
