jan 1, 1886 - "Zinc-Carbon Cell" - 1886

Description:

Created by Carl Gassner, this battery had no liquid electrolyte and was the first dry-cell battery. By mixing ammonium chloride with plaster, it created a conductive paste that was used in batteries. This new battery was more solid, low maintenance, and did not spill. It allowed devices to be used in many different orientations and led to many battery-powered devices we use today. The National Carbon Company replaced the paste with hard-paper/cardboard material and made this battery the first mass-produced battery in history.
