sep 1, 1620 - The Pilgrims and other Religious groups

Description:

Religious Groups

Pilgrims
They believed in the individual being above the hierarchy, all members are important. They wanted more democracy, which was a threat to James I.
They tried to reform the angelic church in England even more, expecting James I would approve. However, he did not and the thought it would be best to flee the country. They fled to the Netherlands (Leiden) since the Netherlands at that time was a rather liberal country. After some years the Netherlands were about to go into war again, plus they had to deal with economic restrictions.
They decided to establish their colony in the new world. They went there in 1520 aboard the Mayflower to find religious freedom. Once arrived in the new world, they established the Plymouth colony.

Puritans
The puritans were members of a religious reform movement known as Puritanism that arose within the church of England in the late 16th century.
This was a larger-, better-financed group than the pilgrims. They established the Massachusetts bay a decade after the pilgrims.
‘A city on a hill’ was used to describe the expectation that Massachusetts bay would shine like an example to the world. Like an utopia.

Quakers
They wanted a safe place to practice their faith, and therefore went to the Americas. They were few in numbers, and established the colony of Pennsylvania in 1682.
