As vice-president, Harry S. Truman succeeded Roosevelt. It was under his command that the two atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on 6 and 9 August 1945. These bombings led to Japan's surrender on 2 September 1945. The United States launched the Marshall Plan on 5 June 1947. The two great victors, the USA and the USSR, agree on a division of world influence at the Teheran, Potsdam and Yalta conferences. This agreement ended with the launch of the Marshall Plan on 5 June 1947. From then on, there were two opposing blocs: the USA and the USSR. The American president was the author of the Truman Doctrine, which officially included the fight against communism, and therefore containment, in American policy. During his second term, Truman's US became involved in the Korean War. It supported and armed South Korea against the communist North Korea.
