jan 1, 1994 - The North American
Free Trade Agreement
(NAFTA) becomes effective
Description:
"NAFTA, a trade pact between the United States, Canada and Mexico, eliminated virtually all tariffs and trade restrictions between the three nations." 1
This included tariffs and trade restrictions on food as well.
This became the world's largest free trade area with hopes of stimulating trade between the 3 countries. Though critics said this trade agreement would cause losses in U.S. Jobs. See August 2, 2005 for The Central American
Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA).
