jan 1, 1080 - The Armenian Kingdom of
Cilicia is founded by the
Rubenid dynasty.
Description:
During the 10th century, a large number of Armenians had been settled in Cilicia by the Byzantines, following the Byzantine victories over the Muslims. Other followed as the Armenian refugees fled the Seljuq invasion and as Byzantine emperors encouraged them to move. The new arrivals in Cilicia ware dominated by two dynasties, Rubenid (an alleged offshoot of the larger Bagratid family) and, later, Hetumid. The Cilician capital was originally at Tarsus, and later became Sis. Cilicia was a strong ally of the European Crusaders, and saw itself as a bastion of Christendom in the East. It also served as a stronghold for Armenian nationalism and culture. Foundation of the Kingdom also marked the establishment of the catholicosate of Cilicia.
