jan 1, 1071 - Seljuk Turks defeat
the Byzantines at Manazkert
Description:
The Byzantine empire realized the folly of its policy of weakening of vital frontier provinces and, after a series of attempts to defeat the Turks, the Byzantines were catastrophically defeated at Manazkert. The emperor himself was taken prisoner. Thereafter, all of Armenia came under Seljuk Turkish control. Many Armenians fled, becoming pioneers of the world-wide dispersion of Armenians. In the centuries that followed, the history of Armenia is of almost uninterrupted woe and disaster. Her social organization was wrecked, her people gradually rendered leaderless except for clergy.
