jan 1, 653 - Theodore Rshtuni negotiates
peace with the caliphate
Description:
Despite the annexation of Dvin by the caliphate, the Armenians did not lean toward Christian Byzantium. To Armenia, it was a bureaucratic empire which strove to impose its own doctrines on the people and destroy the Armenian feudal structure. The more flexible nature of the caliphate was recognized by many of the Armenian princes, and under the leadership of Theodore Rshtuni a peace was negotiated with Mu'awiya I in 653-54 AD which recognized Armenia as an autonomous tributary state.
