The gravitational redshift is proposed by Einstein. This prediction came from his thoughts during the development of general relativity. It is the phenomenon that electromagnetic waves and photons coming out of a gravitational well lose energy as they travel faraway. The loss of energy is interpreted by the decrease in the wave frequency and increase in the wavelength as the waves move away from the gravitational well.
