the first documentation of modern acupuncture was in The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine from about 100 BC. It was believed to manipulate the flow of life energy, often referred to as chi, throughout the body.

When president Richard Nixon visited China in 1972, the delegation was shown a patient undergoing major surgery while fully awake, receiving acupuncture rather than anesthesia. However, it was later found that the patients selected for the surgery had both a high pain tolerance and received heavy indoctrination before the operation; these demonstration cases were also frequently receiving morphine through an intravenous drip that observers were told contained only fluids and nutrients.
