The Pinkerton Detective Agency was formed in 1850, and hired out in the Gilded Age to infiltrate unions and supply guards to keep strikers and suspected unionists out of factories. They were called in to the Homestead Strike of 1892; This led to several deaths on both sides. They were also used as guards in the Great Railroad Strike of 1877.Added to timeline:
