The Sherman Antitrust Act was passed in 1890 to curb concentrations of power that interfere with trade and reduce economic competition. It was named for a U.S. senator from Ohio, who was an expert on commerce. The law outlawed all combinations that restrained trade between states or with foreign nations, as well as making attempts at monopoly illegal.
