Also known as The Patrons of Husbandry, the Grange was founded in 1867 to advance agricultural methods, as well as promote the social and economic needs of US farmers. Many factors (including the panic of 1873, falling crop prices, and increasing railroad fees) greatly hurt the farmers, causing a surge in Grange membership in the mid-1870s.
