feb 8, 1887 - Dawes Act

Description:

The Dawes Act was signed into law by Grover Cleveland in February of 1887. This act split up reservations held by Native American tribes, distributing them within the tribe. It changed the legal status of tribe members to individuals subject to federal laws and dissolved many tribes. Cleveland did this in an attempt to integrate Native Americans into American culture.
