In 1881, Booker T. Washington founded the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute in Alabama, which focused on training African Americans in agriculture. Washington was a firm supporter of vocational education for African Americans, claiming it gave them an opportunity for economic security. He said that it was more valuable to them than political office, higher education, or social advantages.
