dec 28, 1929 - To what degree does this time period represent a period of progress or decline?
Description:
The time period of 1914-1929 represents progress for Canada. While yes, there were a lot of deaths from WW1 and the loss of economy from the Great Depression, Canada and its citizens had gained major progress as a nation. This can be seen in many different events such as the Battle of Vimy Ridge and the Battle of Passchendaele. During the battles of WW1, one can see that some Black and Indigenous Soldiers had gained respect and were treated as equals to the white soldiers. For example, Jermiah Jones saved his unit from an enemy machine gun nest in Vimy Ridge which resulted in Canada's win of that battle. Jones was respected and treated as equals to the white soldiers present there. Also, women had made tons of progress during this time period. Agnes Campbell Macphail became the first woman to become an MP in Canada. As women were given the right to vote by the war measures act, they voted in Macphail as the first female MP. She was treated as an equal by some MP's present in the House Of Commons. Other inventions/developments such as the first ever insulin to help treat diabetes was invented as well as the Group Of Seven who gained recognition and respect as Indigenous Artists that made wonderful and unique paintings showed major progress for Canadians as well. In conclusion, many groups such as Black Canadians, Women and the Indigenous people's made major progress during 1914-1921.
