aug 22, 1914 - War Measures Act - Canada

Description:

On August 22, 1914, Canada passed the War Measures Act in order to provide the government with new and intrusive powers to prosecute the war. These powers included censorship, the right to detain and arrest Canadians(mostly "enemy aliens"), and the right to take control over any property.

The so called "Enemy Aliens" were treated terribly at this time of war. Canadian Citizens including the government itself believed that Canadians with an origin of German or Austro-Hungarian were enemy's of Canada. Even though they came to Canada to escape war, they were arrested and put in camps with terrible living conditions where they had to work hard labor for 25c a day.
