nov 1, 2018 - Lulu and Nana incident
Description:
The Chinese scientist He Jianku genetically modified a pair of Chinese twin embryos in an attempt to edit the CCR5 gene, which codes for a protein that allows HIV to invade host cells. The premise of this clinical trial was to create an innate resistance to HIV. This was condemned by many as illegal and unethical as it violated many international and Chinese guidelines on gene editing as He Jianku also used a technique called germline editing, a method of directly injecting genetic material into the embryo which is highly illegal in most parts of the world
