jan 1, 1995 - United States V. Lopez

Description:

After bringing a concealed handgun to a public school in Texas, Alfonso Lopez was convicted for violating the Gun-Free School Zones Act of 1990.
Lopez argued that the Act was unconstitutional on the grounds that congress does not have the authority to regulate public schools, which were considered part of the interstate commerce system. This case gave more power to the states in that it took some power of the national government to regulate interstate commerce away. This gave states a more significant role in the commerce between states.
