The Norman conquest started with the Battle of Hastings. Britain was finally successfully invaded and a new Anglo-Norman society was ‚born‘. The Norman invaders were from France and spoke in French dialect. Anglo-Saxon King Harold was beaten by William (duke) – he was shot by an arrow, can be seen in the Tapestry. The Bayeux Tapestry is an embroided piece, 70m long, that captures the history of that time. The Vikings were defeated by Harold Godwinson, who was killed in a follow up battle by William of Normandy. William then became king of England.
