Samuel was one of the contenders for succeeding Joseph. BY had him wait to make his claim until the 12 had returned. Before they returned, Samuel had died. One theory has it that he was poisoned because he was treated by a doctor Stout that was also treating another guy with the same white powder. That guy stopped taking it and survived. Samuel kept taking it and died. His brother William brought charges against Stout but didn't provide any evidence until 1892.
