The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was signed into law in order to overcome state disenfranchisement of Blacks in the South. The act was a huge success, widening the franchise and ensuring the legal development for black Americans granted by the 15th Amendment. It is considered one of the most far-reaching pieces of civil legislature in U.S. history.
