Description:

A United States U-2 spy plane was shot down by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) while flying in Soviet airspace. The aircraft, flown by pilot Francis Gary Powers was performing photographic aerial reconnaissance when it was hit near Sverdlovsk. Although Powers parachuted safely, he was captured when he reached land.
