Description:

The first form of democracy originated in Greece. However, only a small group of people known as "citizens" had political rights and power, meaning women, children, aliens and slaves were excluded from decision making. The citizens participated in society through voting and jury duty, both considered major responsibilities. Juries were large (the largest recorded consisted of 6,000 members) and were later condensed to 101, 501 or 1001 citizens. Women on trial could not speak for themselves: citizens had to speak on their own behalf.
