However, in a bizarre combination of mess-ups, financial constraints, and Venetian trading ambitions, the target ended up being Constantinople, capital of the Byzantine Empire. The crusade stripped the city of its artworks, riches and relics. This gave the fourth crusade the most profit seeking crusade of all the crusades
