dec 7, 1941 - Attack on Pearl Harbour
Description:
Enraged by the US’s interference with the Sino-Japanese war by providing China with oil supplies. On 7th December 1941, Japan launched a surprise attack on the US naval base, Pearl Harbour, located in Oahu Island of Hawaii. Over 300 Japanese aircraft flew over Pearl Harbour, sinking just under 20 of the US’s naval warships and killing more than 2,400 soldiers and civilians and wounding around 1000. This led to the US’s participation in the war with Japan. This is another turning point as the US, an economically developed country, was provoked and turned against Japan. The US also suffered heavy casualties and damage in its arsenal, weakening its military power. Seeing as Japan attempted to sabotage one of China’s allied forces, tensions between China and Japanese worsens as Japan effectively declared war on the US(allied with China) as well. The US also cut all trade with Japan, this damages Japan’s economy and lack of resource supplies can potentially halt Japan’s invasions in China and other countries. This leads to the US taking actions against Japan such as the atomic bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, ending the war.
