dec 18, 2010 - Who the Hell is Richie Jackson and Why Do I Want to Dress Like Him?

Description:

GQ Online

It is maybe appropriate then that Richard Stephen Lawrence Jackson should come along and contradict his sport's cliché with such lethal flamboyance. Richie Jackson turned pro at 22 by combining moves no one had seen in 20 years with impossible twists no one has yet to imitate.

But he got our attention because he looked like a cross between Oscar Wilde and the Mad Hatter. The first time we saw him, he was wearing stovepipe-striped trousers and a dark vest over an acid-trippy pirate shirt and a knotted kerchief. When we got closer, we saw details: buffed, pointed boots, a huge bright buckle, and gaudy but sparsely placed jewelry. His wad mustache curled symmetrically and a peacock feather stood tall in the band of his stiff brown riding hat.

Yet nothing about him was ironic or disrespectful. His velvet waistcoats and matching blazers fit him—because he's had them tailored to fit him. His (rather lovely) shoulder-length hair, thick and clean and combed, makes him look more like a nobleman than a renaissance weirdo. And his collection of antique hats would impress the young Andre 3000.
