aug 15, 2015 - The World's Most Stylish Skater Dies, and Why You Should Care
Description:
GQ Online
Jay Adams was the most stylish skateboarder of all time. He will never be repeated, understood, or explained completely. Those of us who followed his career and studied his moves on a board and his failures and resurrections off one know this. The rest of you should, too.
Like a fish out of water, Jay found himself in trouble almost whenever he wasn’t on a board. He spent time in prison for drug offenses and assault. Pretty much his entire family died in the same year he started doing hard drugs. And his life spiraled downward quickly and viciously, not that he ever really had a shot.
By time he got the fame and credit (largely due to the commitment to telling his story by friend and fellow skater and Doggtown and Z-boys director Stacey Peralta, who once called Jay the architect of modern-day skateboarding) he deserved for the role he played in pioneering a sport that is now as big as soccer and didn’t exist before him he was already a convict and less than himself.
It was like watching a ghost.
