The Persians took advantage of Armenian's inner weakness, and launched a campaign to stamp out Christianity there are replace it with Zoroastrianism. Under this threat, the princes and nobility of Armenia heroically faced the Persians at Avarayr in defense of their faith. Heavily outnumbered, they were defeated; Vardan was killed.
