Description:
- American biochemist Phoebus Levene discovered the nitrogenous base adenine.
- He later discovered the remaining bases which are guanine, thymine and cytosine.
- He also discovered ribose sugar in 1909 and deoxyribose sugar in 1929.
- Phoebus had discovered that nucleotides are made up of a sugar molecule attached to a phosphate group and a nitrogenous base.
- He passed away in 1940 but his legacy continued as many were able to build off his findings, including biochemist Erwin Chargaff.
