jan 1, 168 BC - Split of Samaritanism and Judaism [historical]
Description:
A historical theory backed up by linguistic and archaeological evidence has it that a local Jewish/Israelite temple on Mt. Gerizim in Shechem was first built about 300 BCE by priests from Jerusalem (likely on the basis of an earlier temple at that site dating to about 445 BCE), and that those worshipping at that temple split from Judaism when they refused to support the revolt of the Maccabees against Seleucid rule (168 BCE), which led to their temple being destroyed by Jewish Hasmonean kings around 107 BCE.
The followers of the Mt. Gerizim temple subsequently claimed that their temple was the only authorized center of Israelite worship, just as the followers of the Jerusalem temple claimed.
Samaritans are an Israelite people who consider a version of the Torah sacred and consider Mt. Gerizim in the Land of Israel their holiest site.
Samaritan history, where it differs from Jewish history, is not represented in this timeline. Edit: I am working on adding Samaritan history. Samaritan events are marked with "(Samaritan Israelite)", and events that predate the Samaritan/Jewish split but have since been associated exclusively with the Samaritan community are marked with "[historical]/(Samaritan Israelite)"
