jan 1, 90 - Split of Christianity and Judaism
Description:
The split between Christianity and Judaism was a gradual process - Jewish followers of Jesus (a claimed messiah who, if he existed, lived in the early first century CE) initially continued to follow Jewish law, but generally did not require non-Jewish followers of Jesus to do so.
Non-Jewish Christians quickly became the majority of Christians, and in the mid-1st century the apostle Paul criticized Jewish Christians as Judaizers. By the 90s CE, Christians petitioned the Roman Emperor Domitian to be recognized as a distinct religion.
While most Jewish people and Jewish leadership did not consider Jesus the messiah and criticized Jews who did, Jewish communities likely did not view Jewish Christians as truly non-Jewish until about 150 CE.
Early Christianity was influenced by (or perhaps originated in) Gnosticism, a movement based in Hellenistic philosophy and Levantine polytheism.
Christian history is not represented on this timeline.
