2. This was a package of five separate bills passed by the US congress that defused a political confrontation between slave and free states.

3. A bill that tried to satisfy both the North and the South. Though it was a win-win situation for both sides it worsened the battle to end slavery by adding a Fugitive Slave Law which gave the South the legal authority to catch runaway slaves.
