1979, Deng Xiaping became ruler. After the great leap forward and the cultural revolution, the country was left destitute. Xiaoping announced that in order for China to move forward, they would have to accept some capitalist ideas. This meant that China would introduce a free market economy but keep it’s socialist ideals.
