may 7, 1915 - Sinking of the Lusitania
Description:
The sinking of the British ocean liner, the Lusitania shocked the world and generated a great deal of hate for Germans. While the Lusitania was carrying rifle ammunition and shells for the war, it also had 1,959 passengers on board. When the German U-boat sank the ship 1,198 people drowned 128 of which were Americans. This created an outcry in America against the Germans, greatly contributed to anti-German sentiment, and was a catalyst for launching the US into World War I.
