Description:

What is it? The Civil Rights Act is a landmark act which outlaws any discrimination or segregation based on race, color, gender, or religion. Initially it was proposed by John F. Kennedy but was opposed by a filibuster, but then later it was passed by Lyndon B. Johnson.
Who was Involved? Although it was initially proposed by JFK and then passed by Lyndon B. Johnson, it took a multitude of widespread non violent direct action protests which included many of the movement leaders.
Where did it Happen? White House and Capitol
Major Cause: The large scale non violent direct action is what brought this act to be created, since the Civil Rights movement was so large, it became a national push for the advancement of desegregation. It is the efforts of all the movement’s leaders which brought this act to be.
Major Effect: This Act was an end to racial segregation and other racial divide. It is used to enforce the 14th and 15th amendments and guarantee every citizen equal protection under the laws. It also prohibits voter requirements that were unequal and racial segregation in schools.
