jan 1, 1769 - Napolean
Description:
Napoleon Bonaparte was a French military leader and emperor who conquered much of Europe in the early 19th century. Napoleon rapidly rose through the ranks of the military during the French Revolution and eventually crowned himself emperor in 1804 after seizing political power in France. "He successfully waged war against various coalitions of European nations and expanded his empire" He was born in August of 1769 on the island of Corsica. Napolean died in 1821. Napolean's inevitable fall came in response to three major mistakes, The Continental system, The Peninsular War, and The Invasion of Russia. The continental system was the blockade designed by Napoleon to stop Great Britain through the destruction of British commerce, its intention was to stop all other countries from trading with Great Britain. It failed because Napolean did not have control of the seas, which allowed for British ships to smuggle goods into Europe. The failure of the continental system affected Europe by causing its economy to fall and made goods less scarce. The peninsula war was an effort by Napolean to have Portugal get ton board with the Continental System. He sent an invasion into Spain who fought hard against the French and with the help of The British Napoleon lost about 300,000 men during the peninsular war. Which resulted in a weakened French empire. The Invasion of Russia reaped the most consequences of Napoleans mistakes. He lost over 500,000 soldiers and more importantly destroyed his aura of invincibility that kept much of Europe complacent. Agian this was an attempt to get other nations on board with the Continental System. Napoleon's Invasion of Russia began when Napoleon's Grande Armée crossed the Neman River in an attempt to engage and defeat the Russian Army in 1812. The Grande Armée lost 300,000 troops and Russia lost close to 200,000. The invasion stalled Napoleon's march across Europe and lead to his first exile.
