В день венчания на царство Алексея Михайловича 12 июля 1645 в Хлынове (Вятке) слепой Петр Палкин исцелился от иконы Спаса Нерукотворного. В Москве это посчитали добрым знаком. Посланники царя с молитвой сняли образ и крестным ходом понесли в Москву. Встреча в столице происходила 14 января 1647 г. у Яузских ворот при огромном стечении народа. Навстречу вышли сам царь с семьей и патриарх Иосиф. Приложившись к святой иконе, Алексей Михайлович с приближенными внес ее в Кремль через Фроловские ворота и далее — в Успенский собор. В память об этом событии указ царя Алексея Михайловича от 17 апреля 1658 года закрепил за воротами официальное название — Спасские.
