Responding to a question from MPs, UK Foreign Office Secretary of State for Asia and the Pacific Martin Field said he welcomed Hong Kong's Chief Executive Carrie Lam's statement of this day and said respecting the rights and freedoms stated in the Sino-British Joint Declaration and Hong Kong's high degree of autonomy were of utmost importance and Britain had a duty to oversee them. He also reiterated the validity of the Sino-British Joint Declaration, saying that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had met with the Chinese Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Liu Xiaoming, to express this position.
