jan 1, 1800 - Changes to the Class System
Description:
As the ideas of classical liberalism took hold, society began to change. In the past, people were born into a particular social class and remained in it their whole lives. Classical liberalism valued the individual as unique and encouraged more economic opportunities. Although the idea of "social classes" began to die away, a class structure based on wealth began to emerge. Changes to the class structure so that people could not be born into a better station in life was a key feature of liberalism. Classical liberalism valued private property and economic freedom. There were still distinctions between classes because of wealth. Some people were born into more money than others. However, under classical liberalism, people had greater opportunities to become wealthy and join a higher economic class.
