Description:

The Singer Sewing Machine was patented in 1851 by Isaac Merritt Singer. This machine is thought of as the first modern machine because it used lock stitch rather than chain stitch as well as a foot treadle and a vertically mounted needle. Some of these sewing machines are still in use today in private homes.
