Kitty Genovese was the spark that lead to social psychologists studying what is known as the bystander effect. Kitty was stabbed 14 times in a residential alleyway over the course of 30 minutes. She could be heard yelling for help, and numerous people reported having heard her screams; but, they had all claimed to expect someone else to call.
