Early In the war, liquid blood plasma brought many Marines or soldiers back from near death. During the war, scientists sought after and eventually developed a better substitute for blood, serum albumin. Finally, in 1945, whole blood, rich in red blood cells that carry oxygen, was available in medical facilities near the battlefield. [2]
