jan 1, 1588 - Francis Drake Helped England Defeat the Spanish Armada
Description:
Francis Drake defeating the Spanish Armada was a classic "underdog story". The Spanish Armada took many years to be completed. It consisted of an extremely powerful fleet of warships that Phillip II of Spain wanted to destroy England with. Phillip II had many problems with England leafing to his invasion including Elizabeth I rejecting him, Sir Francis Drake stealing gold and destroying his first Armada, the English aiding the Netherlands in war, and lastly, England being Anglican while Spain was Catholic. Phillip set sail in 1588 with his 120 war ships with a goal to pick up 30,000 Spanish soldiers stationed in the Netherlands to come and defeat England. When England saw the ships coming, they were all frantic, panicked, and fearful, but one man, was willing to challenge Spain's powerful fleet. Francis Drake cut the ships off, sailed through them in the night, and got behind the wind, giving England a major advantage. He then went with the notorious fire ship lan, where he set his own ships on fire to scare the Spanish ships. Scared, the Spanish ships cut their anchors and were swept until freezing waters, and storms led to their demise. This was another great display of courage, and Francis Drake will be remembered for his bravery and will forever.
