jan 1, 1963 - Stanley Milgram conducts experiments on obedience to authority

Description:

Stanley Milgrim was interested in the Nazi Germans who had testified that they were just following orders during the events of WWII. He had students fill in as teachers with a confederate being a student. The teacher (Ss) was to ask the student (confederate) a list of paired words, if the student got it wrong the teacher was to apply an electric shock. There was a researcher (authority figure) present in the room, and when the Ss would show signs of resistance to shocking the student, the researcher would prod the teacher to continue.
Milgram's studies showed that 65% of participants continued to the highest voltage, and every participant continued at least to 300 volts.
