While the actual role of the Roman emperor came about gradually after the end of the Roman Republic in 27 BCE, a series of powerful men ruled the Roman Empire from that time until the beginning of the Middle Ages. After the collapse of the western portion of the empire in the fifth century CE, the idea of the Roman Empire lived on among the Germanic peoples of Western Europe and in the Byzantine Empire of the east.
