Alexander the Great, King of Macedonia, began his conquest of the Persian Empire in 336 BCE. His campaign was extremely successful as he defeated the Persian Empire. After Alexander's untimely death, a civil war broke out between his generals causing his empire to split into four factions which would be dominant political entities for the next 300 years.
